Reimagining & Reconstructing the “INvisible INSTITUTION.”
Artist Statement:
Ralph Ellison wrote, “The truth is in the light and the light is in the truth.” To me, truth emerges when we illuminate what has been hidden. I grew up in that darkness—adopted into a religious family and shaped by Christian schooling that defined the body, desire, and destiny through an omnipotent, rule-bound God. In practice, I encountered faith through a fear-based, patriarchal lens that magnified my perceived flaws as a visibly queer and effeminate young man. The resulting shame and isolation pushed me to seek belonging—not by conforming, but by creating a world of my own.
I approach art-making as meditation—where spirituality and healing converge. Through disciplined practice, I hold myself accountable, process my past, and transform hardship into growth. I create sacred objects, rituals, and resources that deepen this work. I am called to share these insights—not just to express my truth, but to help build a collective understanding of it through community, dialogue, and connection. My work is a living space for that exchange, where relationships deepen and shared truth takes form.
